A plain wall or a smooth gradient gives Zoom’s edge detection an even field to work against, so you get a sharp outline instead of that shimmering halo around your shoulders. Light direction matters here as much as anywhere: if you’re lit from the left, pick a background that is too, because that gives a fake away faster than resolution ever will. Size is the one thing you don’t have to think about. Every file is 1920×1080 and well under Zoom’s 5MB cap, ready to drop in.
