View AVIF files without installing anything

AVIF is the next-generation image format. It delivers dramatically smaller file sizes than JPEG and PNG while maintaining excellent quality. But if you download an AVIF image and try to open it, there’s a good chance your default image viewer won’t recognize it. Windows Photo Viewer doesn’t support it natively. Older versions of macOS Preview don’t either.

This tool opens AVIF files directly in your browser. Drop a file, see the image, and read its metadata. No software to install, no file uploaded to a server, no account required.

How it works

  1. You drop a .avif file onto the upload area
  2. Your browser decodes the image natively (Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, Safari 16+ all support AVIF)
  3. The tool reads the file to extract format details: dimensions, file size, color depth
  4. If the file contains EXIF metadata (camera, date, GPS), that’s extracted and displayed too
  5. The image and all metadata appear side by side

Your file never leaves your device. Everything runs in your browser’s memory.

What is the AVIF image format?

AVIF stands for AV1 Image File Format. It was developed by the Alliance for Open Media, which includes Google, Apple, Mozilla, Netflix, and others. AVIF is based on the AV1 video codec and uses the HEIF container format.

The key advantage of AVIF is compression efficiency. A typical AVIF file is 50% smaller than an equivalent JPEG and 20% smaller than WebP at the same visual quality. AVIF also supports features that JPEG lacks: transparency, HDR, wide color gamut, and both lossy and lossless compression.

How to open an AVIF file on Windows, Mac, or iPhone

Windows 10/11: Install the free “AV1 Video Extensions” from the Microsoft Store. After installation, Windows Photo Viewer and the Photos app will open AVIF files. Or use this viewer instantly with no install.

macOS: macOS Ventura (13) and later support AVIF natively in Preview and Quick Look. Older versions require a third-party app or this browser-based viewer.

iPhone/iPad: iOS 16 and later support AVIF natively. Older iOS versions can use this viewer in Safari.

Linux: Most modern Linux distributions support AVIF through libraries like libavif. GIMP 2.10.32+ can open and export AVIF.

Is AVIF better than JPEG and PNG?

AVIF offers better compression than both JPEG and PNG in most scenarios.

AVIF vs JPEG: AVIF files are typically 50% smaller than JPEG at comparable visual quality. AVIF also supports transparency, lossless compression, and HDR — features JPEG lacks entirely.

AVIF vs PNG: For photographic images, AVIF with lossy compression produces dramatically smaller files than PNG. For lossless use cases like screenshots, AVIF lossless is typically 20-30% smaller than PNG.

The tradeoff: AVIF has less universal support than JPEG or PNG. Not all software opens AVIF files yet. If you need maximum compatibility, convert to PNG or JPEG using the tools linked above.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the AVIF image format?

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It offers significantly better compression than JPEG and PNG at comparable quality. AVIF supports both lossy and lossless compression, transparency, HDR, and wide color gamut. It was developed by the Alliance for Open Media.

Do I need to install software to open AVIF files?

No. This viewer opens AVIF files directly in your browser. There is nothing to install, no plugin to download, and no account to create. It works on any device with a modern browser.

Why can't I open AVIF files on my computer?

Many older operating systems and image editors don't support AVIF yet. Windows 10 requires the AV1 Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store. Older versions of macOS Preview don't recognize AVIF. This viewer lets you open AVIF files instantly in your browser without installing anything.
